Thomas Sabella was my uncle; my mother’s younger brother; and my godfather. He was an 18-year veteran of the FDNY. He left behind a wife and 2 children (11-year old daughter and 6-year old son, at the time). In the weeks following 9/11 I met 2 separate groups of firefighters elsewhere in the city, all of whom knew him personally. they all mentioned the same traits about him; things we all knew for as long as we knew him. He loved his family fiercely and was one of the kindest men you’d ever meet. He was caring and selfless at every turn. His smile lit up rooms and laugh was unforgettable. He was known for golfing, vegetable gardening, winemaking and skiing. On the side, he was a carpenter and his handiwork could be found all over the firehouse. If you knew him for more than a few seconds, you knew he was always Tommy. He was loved by many, and still is today.
