Firefighter Benjamin Suarez

Benjamin Suarez, 34, had his wife’s name tattooed on one arm and the FDNY logo entwined with a dragon on the other. A devoted father to his four young children, he often took his whole company to their games or school plays. He was ending his 24-hour shift the morning of 9/11, when he stayed on to ride in “heavy” with his crew. “I have to help the people,” was what he told his wife.

Today I walked the Fort Worth Tunnels To Towers 5K honoring Stephen Siller and all the firefighters who lost their lives on 911, along with a Fort Worth police officer who was killed in the line of duty last year. Each participant got to wear a badge to honor a firefighter who died that day. I wore a badge for your father. I told some family members who also participated that I would try to find your mother or one of his family members to tell them what an honor it was for me. I hope that your family has found some peace, though I know the pain doesn’t ever completely leave. His sacrifice is not forgotten.
