It was reported that firefighter David Halderman, 40, was on the 18th floor and on his way down out of the North Tower when he and another Squad 18 member responded to a May Day from another company and returned to the upper floors to help. He was one of many to receive a posthumous promotion.
Halderman came from a firefighting family. His father had a 30 year career before retiring from the FDNY. One of his two brothers, a member of Engine 325 (their Dad’s company) was called to the scene after the collapse. Like so many other FDNY family members, he worked the pile, searching. Halderman’s helmet was found, identified by his badge number 10652, the same as his dad’s.
